Will planting ivy ground cover completely take over weeds and grass, or do I have to clear the ground?

In my experience ivy covers absolutely everything and rapidly. Eventually it will cover grass, weeds and also climb up any other shrubs or walls and take a hold.

It can be very invasive but you can cut it back regularly to stop its growth for a while. It would be better to reasonably clear the area to give it a good start and plant at intervals over the area you wish to be covered, water well and it will find it's own way. Good luck.

Depends on the weeds. Ivy will cover deep rooted perennial weeds but they will grow through. Things like ground elder will cover the ivy. Clear is always the best answer
Reply:For best results, clear the ground. The ivy may take a couple years to fill in the bare spots'
