Gravel Drives - How do I avoid vehicle wheel-spin..?

I re-graveled the front drive of my house. I did it in a hurry and now have to deal with some problems.

The original surface was gravel which had become mixed with the underlying clay like a muddy concrete. I installed drainage - a bottle gulley to a RW drain, with a run of land-drain into the gulley.

I removed loose pebbles from the old surface and laid 2metre-wide (7') strips of black weed-guard. I secured the joins with galvanised banding fixed with 6" (150mm) nail. On top of this, I laid 2" (50mm) of 20mm gravel.

The end result is OK. It's like walking over a shingle beach. The noise gives good intruder warning and it has put an end to all former drainage problems. However, there is a downside.

Driving across it produces wheelspin that can rip the fabric. What can I do? If I cleared the gravel, then laid a layer of sharp sand before putting the gravel back, would this help? There are honeycomb plastic tile systems, but these are expensive. Anyone here have any experience?

Your problem is the type of gravel you used. You need to place a dusty stone as the top layer on your drive. Stone called 53's is a great top coat. This stone, after a few showers and packing w/cars driving on top, soon becomes packed, similar to concrete.

In the meantime, you just need to learn to start slower and accelerate like you have an egg between your foot and the accelerator peddle.
Reply:use crusher run gravel entirely.this gravel has not been washed so you have lots of dust in it so water it down after you spread it. if your driveway is steep and you have a 4x4 use 4 high to get to the top Report It

Reply:i take it you are not too heavy on the gas pedal?? anyway,, lime stone,,, LIME STONE, ,, the pieces have angled edges not rounded like rocks,, it has a powdery by product that acts like cement, and it stays on top of the dirt where as rocks like to sink!! i put down two layers of rock and drove on it for a year, this pushed it into the dirt,, then a layer or two of lime stone on top!!! like driving on very very coarse sand paper!!!
Reply:For best drainage use 1/4 inch pea stone sand get some more horse power in your truck.
