What grass can I use to choke out all other weeds?

I've cleared a plot of young growth forest in upstate NY, and want to plant hardwoods and grass. I only want to brushhog it a few times each year, but don't care if it gets ~2 feet tall. I've cut down the native weeds, and am willing to till the ground if I must. Rye grass is my leading idea to choke out the weeds. The drainage in the area is poor.

Thanks for your time,

What grass can I use to choke out all other weeds?
zyosia grass is a really thick turf, almost like very plush carpeting. the blades are compacted close together and withstands summer, insects, diseases and weeds. It has a heavy root system that makes it spread. (my mom has some alongside of her garage, it has since spread to halfway into my neighbor's yard). The only drawback to the zyosia grass is that it is the first grass to go dormant (turn yellow) when the temps start to fall. usually you can just buy it in "plugs" and it spreads from there. not sure if this is what you are looking for, but hope it helps.
Reply:RYE GRASS GROWS RAPIDLY...ITS WHAT IS USED TO PROTECT THE QUALITY SEED UNDERNEATH UNTIL ITS WELL ESTABLISHED....ZOYSIA LOCKS OUT WEEDS BETTER THAN ANYTHING ON A LAWN...IF YOU ARE JUST GOING TO LET IT GROW WILD...ID USE SOME FORM OF FEED GRASS THAT RESEEDS ITSELF...FARMERS WOULD BALE IT FREE OF CHARGE TO GET IT AS FEED LATER ON.......GO TO FARM BUREAU STORE FOR TYPE. SHEPHERDS GRASS IS NUTRITIONAL BUT YOU DO HAVE TO FERTILIZE IT...GOOD LUCK
Reply:Use Scott's products it helps.
Reply:your answer from foeneer orsomething like that just answered you correctly.....throw fescue in with the rye....when the warm weather comes, the rye will die back and the fescue will be so happy ......with virtually no care
Reply:orchard grass is good if you let it grow long.
Reply:Is there any chance of you improving the drainage somewhat? You could be wasting your time and money, otherwise. The other alternative is by raising the ground level.
Reply:Throw some fescue in with your rye and that should do it by next year. Good luck
Reply:I feel Perennial Rye grass seed would be your best answer, if you will , It likes to be sown while the HIGH temperature still hits 80 degrees. That's the ticket!
Reply:we plant treefoil.....it is a clover that self seeds. it is good for haying or it is good for deer if you just want to leave it go wild.
Reply:Beside the rye grass, I'd use Bermuda.
Reply:Bermuda grows thick. It will take all the nutrients from the ground.Killing all other weeds. Ihoped this helps you.
Reply:just throw straw down...
Reply:Zoysia-low maintenance and it likes lots of water-perfect for your situation.
