Why are rows of plants covered in plastic?

two related questions. I drive by a farm that has dozens of rows of some item covered in plastic. First is this done to reduce weeds, hold in moisture, both, some other cause? Second in this same farm some rows have clear plastic and others have black. Is there some significance to that too?

Why are rows of plants covered in plastic?
as you said it, it is to reduce evaporation, to control pests such as harmful insects that could damage the plants and also may be squirrels and rats.

the plants covered in black plastic dont need sunlight that much. the clear ones need it, but in moderation. when you are growing tiny seedlings, it would be a good idea to cover them like this.

probably there are seeds in the soil and they ve put up the plastic to shield the seedlings from the sun.
Reply:Well, I remember my grandpa did that too, he put most of the plants in clear white plastic coverings while the other few ones had black plastic coverings, he told me some of these needs light, but always it does with evaporation to keep the water to stay in there, the darker ones dont need sunlight, and well, the house we lived was really sunny until we had more branches and vines giving more plants shades.
